PALS stands for Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening, which is part of the requirement of the Early Intervention Reading Initiative. The initiative was established in 1997 by the Virginia legislature and is coordinated by the Virginia Department of Education. All kindergarten students and students new to Virginia in first through third grades are screened in September and October using the PALS instrument. A spring screening is also administered yearly for all kindergarten, first and second grade students. Students who are identified through the screening process receive additional instruction in phonological awareness and early literacy skills. Each identified student receives intervention from one of the following instructors: a PALS support staff member, reading specialist, Title 1 teacher, or a special education teacher. The instruction is conducted in a small group each day for 30 minutes.
