The mission of the Virginia Beach elementary physical education staff is to provide age-appropriate skill and fitness instruction that will enable children to be physically active for a lifetime.

Here at Pembroke Meadows we strive to introduce all students to a variety of skill themes and motor skills.  Students in grades 4 and 5 will participate in a fitness assessment program called “Fitness Gram.”  This new and exciting program was developed by the Cooper Institute and will provide parents with data that will give them valuable information regarding the overall fitness of their child.  Students in grades 1-3 will be introduced to these same tests to familiarize them with the techniques and muscle groups being tested.  Parents should ask their children about these techniques or, even better, have them demonstrate a test and then try it themselves.  The students have been very positive and enthusiastic about the whole process.  The test items include:

  1. 20 meter pacer (cardiovascular strength and endurance)
  2. Cadence Curl-ups (abdominal strength and endurance)
  3. Cadence Push-ups (upper body strength and endurance)
  4. Modified Sit and Reach (flexibility)

Parents, you can help your family live a healthy, active lifestyle by making wise nutritional choices and making time for physical activities daily.  We are fortunate to live in an area where we have so many fitness options.  How about taking a walk at First Landing State Park or Mt. Trashmore?  You can also take a nice bike ride down by the boardwalk or False Cape State Park.  The opportunities are endless so find something you enjoy and get active.  Your kids will thank you for it!
